I’m one of the vast majority of Canadians hoping our southern neighbour replaces its national leader next November.

With horror I saw that Catholic leaders in that country had chosen to “single issue” the election, a blind and dangerous choice, and then to endorse the sitting president on the basis of this one issue.

That single issue, rating ahead of health care, poverty, racism, climate and immigration, is, predictably, abortion. Last November, the bishops met in Baltimore and endorsed a program called “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.” They voted 143 to 69 to make abortion the “pre-eminent issue” in the 2020 election.

Intellectually bankrupt and stubborn, the American bishops, led by Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, (that’s the rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral) are counselling the faithful to vote for Donald Trump in 2020. Cardinal Dolan was fawning in praise of Trump on Fox News.

There are a couple of burning questions. How has it happened that members of the church follow such direction? Over what period of time and through what means have church leaders appropriated to themselves a superior spiritual and ethical consciousness?

The second question is to what extent will the Catholic voter, the Catholic woman, follow these bishops, and relegate their own reasoning to a back seat? It is “Father knows best,” taken to extremes.

For modern Catholics there are four disastrously mistaken teachings: No birth control, no abortion, no same-sex marriage, no stem-cell research. Not one of them is theologically sound. Attitudes toward women and sex comprise the official Church’s Achilles heel.
