Charmaine Magumbe was the recipient of the 2017 YMCA Peace Medal at a ceremony on Friday November 24, 2017 at the YMCA in Peterborough. Both are women of accomplishment. Both were born elsewhere but are thoroughly Canadian.
Both are "women of colour," to use an awkward but understandable term. And both are on the younger side of the field, articulate and positive about the city, its assets and its challenges. I would be confident in either were they to win office. Both represent the future of Peterborough.
And I imagine both would be formidable opponents to the Ontario Tory government with its rolling series of backward policies.
Charmaine Magumbe and Kemi Akapo, Charmaine in Monaghan Ward and Kemi in Town Ward, have launched vigorous campaigns for municipal council for the election of Oct. 22. This week I will profile Charmaine Magumbe, and in two weeks' time, Kemi Akapo.
