We sure are being challenged these days, even in little old Peterborough.

The relentless, sad news, rising illness and economic distress, self-isolation, and the radical change of daily habits are, all together, causing us profound dislocation and anxiety. We can get depressed.

These three realities are intensified many times over by the ghastly denial behaviour of the leader of the great country along our border.

Let's start with No. 1: Data about the sick. One of the mixed blessings of our age is quick data, and at this writing there are 900,000 cases of COVID19 worldwide, 171 countries are affected, with more than 4,000 deaths. In Canada, we have 5,000 cases and 63 deaths.

There are over 100,000 cases in the States, which is now the epicenter of the disease, and chastened by dire predictions.

No 2:  Job loss, closings, and layoffs have become a huge worry among individuals and families, causing widespread anxiety about paying bills.

No. 3:  Being alone with too much negative thinking, too much access to media voices, too little comfort from friends and family, too much restriction on physical movement.

But, look to the other side, always.

There are thousands of antidotes for these stressors, right at hand. Listen to CBC for your information, but only twice a day. Give up CNN for Lent, and Fox News forever. Listen to classical CMFX out of Cobourg for blissful escape.

Walk outside at an appropriate distance. See the greetings which our new Maritime-style friendliness is bringing out, and the compliance with regulations practised almost everywhere. Bikes, kids, teens, old couples all are respecting the necessary spacing.  There is some spring sunshine.  The PM, our newfound elder, is chastising and encouraging us from his front lawn every morning.  His finest hour.
