My experience with canoes began in the 1950s. In Kirkland Lake, I was in a family whose parents had never learned to swim. My father was determined his four kids would learn water skills, so he sent us to summer camps on Georgian Bay.

By age 15, I was a counsellor. Everyone learned canoe skills: the Big J, the little J, the sweep and the draw.

Fast forward to 2007. I joined a group of mature women, motivated by Joyce Mackenzie and Myra Collins of Lakefield, to sign on to a 10-day canoe trip along the Yukon River from Pelle Crossing to Dawson City, all under the knowledgeable direction of Lin Ward of Canoe North Adventures. The Yukon is a wide river with no portages and a nice helpful westward current for paddlers.

But at one crucial point, my canoe smarts deserted me. I was in the stern. We were attempting to land on a spit of terra firma, but had overshot it. I could hear Lin yelling, "Pry, Pry!" Do you think I could remember that stroke?
