What is going on in Peterborough?
Two recent year-end reports point to conflicting realities in our city.
The first, and we can thank everybody for this one, is that we are among the 10 top communities in Canada for low numbers of car accidents per capita. Put that up against our ongoing griping about "Peterborough drivers." Whether that is enlightened drivers, fewer kilometres driven, conscientious policing, or patched and bumpy roads that make one slow down, it shows a sense of responsibility toward others that is good news.
On the other hand, to our shame, Peterborough also ranks among the top 10 communities for racist incidents reported to police in 2018. We have work to do here. The New Canadians Centre thrives, and we have absorbed 300 Syrian refugees, mostly smoothly, but yahoos there remain in every age group and sector. That can be a new year's pledge, to spot and challenge and put a stop to racist remarks, jokes, taunts and actions.
